Rules of the Multimedia Center
1. The technician-supervisor is responsible for the management of the Multimedia Centre. Please follow his / her instructions. In case of disagreement, the technician-supervisor is the sole (and admittedly subjective) judge as to whether a site or activity is acceptable or not. Similarly, the technician-supervisor may, at any time, adapt the rules of access, in order to attain optimum management of the network.
2. Access to the internet is filtered by censoring software which refuses access to pornographic sites as well as those promoting violence or racial hatred.
3. Priority is given to educational needs such as research for a class or talk. If, for instance, all of the computers are being used by individuals surfing the net for personal ends, and another person needs to search for material for a class, the 'surfers' must give him / her priority.
4. Personal surfing on the net must be limited to research of a practical, intellectual or cultural nature. Please ensure that research subjects are reasonably serious - granted, a subjective concept. The following examples are an indication of the kind of subject considered acceptable: visiting the site of Le Monde newspaper or of Paris Match magazine, viewing an exhibition, visting a school or the Louvre museum, yes. Checking a train timetable, making airline reservations, or exploring the catalogue of a bookshop, yes. Looking for video games or 'girlie' photos, no. We reserve the right to cut any connection contravening the missions of the library. Please follow the instructions of the technician-supervisor.
5. You may send and receive e-mail, but if all of the computers are occupied and a user needs them for work-related research, then this has to be given priority.
6. For practical reasons related to the management of the network, on-line chatting, music and video images are allowed in the evenings and on Sundays only.
- In the daytime, no videos on the internet, with the sole exception of those (such as TVnews, language courses, conferences,...) recommended for classes
- In the evenings and on Sundays, entertainment videos (clips, film extracts, etc.) are allowed, but the technician-supervisor has the right to ask a user to leave a site if the images (s)he has on screen are imcompatible with the principles of the Campus.
7. Absolutely NO games.
8. Absolutely NO access to reality TV sites.
9. No downloading - although the technician-supervisor may, exceptionally, give permission to do so if (s)he is satisfied that copyright has been respected.
10. Students of the LPMT (Campus high school) may use the Multimedia Centre during school hours, but only upon presentation of a pass signed by the school counsellor. This pass indicates timetables and access rights: research (on a clearly specified subject), or whether the bearer is allowed personal surfing, access to e-mail - or not. The technician-supervisor is there to check that everything is done correctly and to countersign the pass.
These rules also apply to students who wish to access their email in the Multimedia Centre using their own computers.
